Prioritize These Qualities When Choosing a Skilled Nursing Facility

January 16, 2019 by Jen McCallon

skilled nursing facility

The world’s population of people aged 60 and over is expected to double between 2015 and 2050, jumping from 12% to 22%. Knowing this, it makes sense that more and more skilled nursing facilities and assisted care homes are opening their doors. However, they’re not all the same, and when looking for a skilled nursing home that meets your loved one’s physical needs, it’s essential to prioritize the right qualities. Here are just a few tips to help you choose the right long term care facility for your loved one.

Prioritization of Food Accommodations and Eating Schedule

First, a high-quality skilled nursing facility understands the importance of good food and a consistent eating schedule. They should go out of their way to make sure each and every patient is eating enough and getting proper nutrition.

“Well-balanced, attractively prepared meals should be available and served in a pleasant setting that provides opportunities for social interaction. Special meals to accommodate residents’ health problems, as well as their religious and ethical needs — if you’re vegetarian or vegan — should be available. Staff should follow a policy of monitoring nutritional intake and promptly notifying family members, and/or the resident’s physician when a resident is eating poorly or has difficulty eating,” writes Marian Anne Eure on Very Well Health.

Clean and Relaxing Environment

It’s also necessary to choose a facility that is properly maintained and has a pleasant appearance and atmosphere. Regardless of the number of total residents, skilled nursing facility staff should take extra steps to ensure that they’re providing residents with a comfortable and hygienic living experience.

Underlying Respect For Residents

Finally, it’s important to choose a skilled nursing care facility with staff members that continue to show they care about each and every resident. This goes above and beyond providing basic physical care; it’s more emotional and involves tone of voice, listening of concerns, and respect for overall wellbeing. Almost 70% of Americans turning 65 will need long-term care at some point, and basic respect is something that every single resident deserves.

According to data from the American Health Care Association, there are 15,655 skilled nursing care centers in the United States. Taking the time to think about the most important qualities can help you choose the best option for your loved one. For more information about skilled nursing facilities, contact Manor Grove.
