Is it Time to Put my Family Member in a Rehab Facility?

February 23, 2019 by Jen McCallon

rehab facilities

Are you concerned that a family member may need long term care in the near future? Of all Americans turning 65, nearly 70% are in need of this type of care, so do not feel like you are alone. Knowing when to rely on rehab facilities can be a challenge, so consider these common signs that it is time to get your loved one the care they deserve.

Signs of Aggression or Stress

When an older person feels that their physical or mental ailments are putting too big of a burden on their caregiver, they may show signs of anger or resentment. This can lead to outbursts and frustrating arguments between the family members. This increased tension can also put a big strain on once-loving relationships, leading to a sad situation all around.

Rehab facilities are designed to offer the care and attention people deserve, without making them feel like they are putting an excessive workload on any one person. After all, that is what the facility is there for. Once they are settled into a skilled nursing facility, you will likely notice a weight lifted from their shoulders.

On this same note you, as the caregiver, may feel the need for a break, as well. If you are feeling like your loved one’s care routine is becoming too much to take on, it could cause feelings of bitterness to come up. Your family member or friend will likely notice your irritation, putting stress on them, and you will feel pulled in countless different directions as you try to manage it all.

Put an end to these troubles and ensure your relationships stay intact by looking into skilled nursing facilities or rehab facilities right away.

Maintaining Safety Levels

Another concern is safety. If a person is facing issues with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, then they may need to be placed into a care facility to ensure they stay as protected as possible. All too often, we hear stories of older individuals getting lost or wandering somewhere that is potentially dangerous, and usually, the family members cannot be there 24/7 to watch over them.

Long term care facilities are designed to handle specific situations just like this on a regular basis, and the skilled and qualified staff know just how to calm a frustrated patient who may be experiencing bouts of forgetfulness.

If your loved one is facing problems that are past your skill level to address, then the time to research rehab facilities is now. They deserve to have adequate time invested in them and to be in an environment that better suits their needs and interests.

On this same note, you deserve to feel at peace knowing this person you love and respect is getting the treatment they need to stay safer and healthier day after day.

Don’t put it off any longer. Talk with our staff today about getting started on this process. It’s the best choice for everyone.
