Getting Support for the Entire Family When Alzheimers Disease is the Diagnosis

July 2, 2020 by Jen McCallon

long term care facility

It can be very painful to watch someone you love have to deal with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. A long term care facility can help to keep your loved one safe, and provide professional care to improve their quality of life.

Late stage Alzheimer’s patients can be a danger to themselves and others searching for a long term care facility near me can be the first step in helping your loved one get the care that they deserve. Learning how to navigate the “new normal” relationship you have with your loved one that is suffering with Alzheimer’s disease can also be fostered by working with the experts at a long term care facility.

Understanding the New Normal

A high-quality long term care facility can provide you with the information you need to better understand Alzheimer’s Disease, the symptoms, and the outlying effect it can have on friends and family of the patient.

Your relationship will change with your loved one and it can be hard to adapt to some of the changes. For example, a parent may no longer recognize their adult children. They may talk of their children as if they are still young.

Often times loved ones living in a long term facility will latch on to staff members and consider them family, even calling them by their children’s names. In other cases, Alzheimer’s patients will accuse staff members of being mean. The mood swings that come with this disease can be tremendous. It is important that family and friends are involved in the patient’s life while they are living in long term care facility even though it can be very difficult.

For Your Own Wellness

It can be a huge challenge for loved ones to watch as the Alzheimer’s patient goes through personality changes, often becomes agitated, and says things that can be very hurtful, however, with the right support you can learn how to manage your relationship with your loved one. When you find the right skilled nursing facility near me, you will find the support that ensures not only your loved one’s wellness but yours too.

Getting the support you need will help you to maintain a relationship with your loved one, and help you to understand more about Alzheimer’s Disease and what to expect. There is help available, learn more today.

The Centers for Disease Control has advised that nursing home populations are at “increased risk of serious illness” caused by COVID-19 relative to the general population. In an effort to maintain a safe environment for our residents, we are taking action in accordance with CDC recommendations to educate our caregivers, our residents and their families.

  • Based on currently available information about COVID-19, no Manor Grove
residents or staff have shown symptoms consistent with individuals who
test positive for the virus.
  • Our management and care providers are conducting regular evaluations of preparedness and supplies inventory, including necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Residents and care providers are receiving regular reminders on proper hygiene behaviors to prevent transmission.

The CDC has also provided guidance for facilities like Manor Grove to “consider new policies and procedures for visitors.” Manor Grove has determined that restricting visitor access is the best way to serve our residents. This policy is under regular review and may change as the public health response continues to develop.

We thank you for your support. Please contact our office with questions.
