6 Key Benefits of Skilled Nursing Services

October 1, 2020 by Jen McCallon

You may need to seek long-term care services for your loved one. Skilled nursing services can provide physical, social, and emotional support to seniors as they rehabilitate and restore their health. Here are some advantages of opting to age in a skilled nursing facility.

1. Specialized Healthcare

The National Council on Aging reports that 80% of seniors older than 65 have at least one serious medical condition. The report also shows that 77% have two or more health issues. Some of these conditions, such as diabetes, stroke, and heart complications, demand patient care that only licensed nurses can give. Skilled nursing services can provide proper medical attention through registered nurses (RN), Licensed Practice Nurses (LPN), and physicians.

2. Medication Management

Skilled nursing facilities can help seniors follow up on their prescription administration. About 64% of people aged 65 or older in nursing homes have Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia. These conditions can make it difficult for seniors to keep track of their medication. At long-term care facilities, registered nurses can remind them to take their medicine. The skilled nurses can also offer wound care, IV therapy, injections, and monitoring of vitals.

3. Speech and Physical Therapy

Regular exercise can provide more energy, improved balance, and stronger muscles. Nursing and rehab centers have physical therapists that assist seniors in keeping fit and strengthening their joints. Speech therapy can help keep the mind active, improving memory, and slowing down the effects of dementia.

4. Proper Nutrition

Healthy foods are critical in the recovery process for older seniors. Most nursing homes have a resident dietitian who offers advice on the dietary requirements for the patients. The foodservice contains balanced meals that provide the necessary nutrients to facilitate a quicker recovery.

5. Socialization

A secluded lifestyle, which is quite common among the elderly, can lead to depression. Skilled nursing services incorporate a built-in social network that enables residents to come together and interact with their peers. The vibrant social life through events and games can help reduce loneliness and depression.

6. Safety

Slips and falls are the leading cause of hospitalization among seniors. Seniors are also easy targets for criminals and financial scammers. The worry is heightened for patients living with dementia who may leave the doors open. For your peace of mind, your loved one may be safer and more secure in a skilled nursing facility.

The qualified nurses at Manor Grove can offer a complete home-like environment for all the residents. If you are looking for a skilled nursing facility St. Louis residents trust, Manor Grove is the place to be.

The Centers for Disease Control has advised that nursing home populations are at “increased risk of serious illness” caused by COVID-19 relative to the general population. In an effort to maintain a safe environment for our residents, we are taking action in accordance with CDC recommendations to educate our caregivers, our residents and their families.

  • Based on currently available information about COVID-19, no Manor Grove
residents or staff have shown symptoms consistent with individuals who
test positive for the virus.
  • Our management and care providers are conducting regular evaluations of preparedness and supplies inventory, including necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Residents and care providers are receiving regular reminders on proper hygiene behaviors to prevent transmission.

The CDC has also provided guidance for facilities like Manor Grove to “consider new policies and procedures for visitors.” Manor Grove has determined that restricting visitor access is the best way to serve our residents. This policy is under regular review and may change as the public health response continues to develop.

We thank you for your support. Please contact our office with questions.
