3 Questions to Ask Yourself When You’re Considering a Nursing Home

December 8, 2020 by Jen McCallon

More than 15% of Americans are 65 years or older. This number is expected to rise to more than 20% over the next three decades. One of the most difficult decisions that families have to make is whether it’s time to take their elderly relative to a nursing home. If your family is in a similar situation, there are a few things you should consider. Let’s delve into the details.

1. Does Your Loved One Have Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease affects a person’s memory, perception, and the ability to make judgments. It also affects your ability to walk, swallow, and speak over time. While older people can take care of themselves in the early stages of the disease, they will face many difficulties remembering simple things, processing information, and concentrating. Driving or engaging in other activities that require lots of focus to handle safely may become dangerous. Nursing home services are equipped and trained to assist your loved one if they have Alzheimer’s disease.

2. Does Your Loved One Need Help Around the House?

As we get older, balance becomes more difficult and it can be challenging to get around. Not only is this frustrating for your loved one, but it’s also scary because it puts them at greater risk for slips and falls. Slips and falls are one of the most common accidents at home and they can be especially dangerous for the elderly. If your loved one is struggling to get around on their own at home and they’re worried about slips, trips, and falls, it may be time to consider full-time nursing home services.

3. Is Your Loved One Physically Impaired?

It is difficult to know when a loved one needs assisted living services. Some chronic ailments such as kidney failure and Parkinson’s disease, which are common in the elderly population, need long-term care. Skilled nursing home services can provide your loved ones with the medical assistance they need without needing to travel to and from the doctor’s office regularly throughout the day or week. Professional nursing home services can also help to reduce the risk of accidents, disease-related episodes, and infections.

Moving your loved one into a nursing home can be a difficult decision. However, nursing home services can provide your loved ones with the medical help and care they need to stay happy and healthy as much as possible. To learn more about the nursing home services we provide or to schedule a tour with us, contact our care facility at Manor Grove today.

The Centers for Disease Control has advised that nursing home populations are at “increased risk of serious illness” caused by COVID-19 relative to the general population. In an effort to maintain a safe environment for our residents, we are taking action in accordance with CDC recommendations to educate our caregivers, our residents and their families.

  • Based on currently available information about COVID-19, no Manor Grove
residents or staff have shown symptoms consistent with individuals who
test positive for the virus.
  • Our management and care providers are conducting regular evaluations of preparedness and supplies inventory, including necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Residents and care providers are receiving regular reminders on proper hygiene behaviors to prevent transmission.

The CDC has also provided guidance for facilities like Manor Grove to “consider new policies and procedures for visitors.” Manor Grove has determined that restricting visitor access is the best way to serve our residents. This policy is under regular review and may change as the public health response continues to develop.

We thank you for your support. Please contact our office with questions.
